Throughout the year there are a number of Netball competitions held in Queensland.
Competitions in the Netball Queensland calendar include:
ANZ Championships is a Trans Tasmin competition consisting of 10 teams from Australia and New Zealand. The Queensland team are the reigning Premiers and are known as the Queensland Firebirds. The ANZ Championship runs from April through to July with the Queensland Firebirds hosting 7 home matches in 2012. www.firebirds.net.au
Australian Netball League
The Australian Netball League (ANL) is the highest amateur netball competition in Australia. All States and Territories in Australia participate in the competition. The ANL runs from July through to September and teams compete against each other in various locations on a weekly basis. The Queensland team is known as the Queensland Fusion and consists of the top level athletes within Queensland. This competition is often used as a scouting opportunity for ANZ coaches and gives the elite Queensland players the opportunity to be seen by such coaches.
Queensland Champions Cup
The Queensland Champions Cup is the premier netball competition in Queensland providing the best opportunities and development environment for elite netballers and officials. Offering weekly competition for the State’s most talented netballers, coaches, umpires and administrators. The Queensland Champions Cup Cup is a direct pathway for State Team and ANL representations. The Queensland Champions Cup will run from February through to July with matches taking place in Brisbane, Golden South, Suncoast and Magnetic North.
Mission Queensland State Netball League
The Mission Queensland State Netball League is a true State wide competition with all 12 Netball Queensland Regions represented. The Mission Queensland State Netball League provides young elite netballers and officials across Queensland with a pathway to Queensland Champions Cup. The competition runs in conjunction with the Queensland Champions Cup from February through to July with matches taking place in all 12 Regions.
The Mount Franklin Challenge provides a representative competition for Netball Queensland registered Associations within South East Queensland for the development of Players, Coaches and Umpires. The competition also provides a pathway from Association level Netball through to the Mission Queensland State Netball League and Queensland Champions Cup competitions. Matches will be played from May through to September at the State Netball Centre, Mt Gravatt.
The State Age Championships is a three (3) day event that brings together the best of Netball Queensland Association Representative teams. Associations may enter one (1) team into each age group, between 13-17 years.
Associations can nominate their challenge, or division two (2) teams into the Challenge Carnival which runs for three days. However Associations are restricted to only entering teams into the same age division/s as entered into State Age Championships in the same competition year. Challenge Carnival is also the only state event that 12 years teams can attend. Associations may enter a maximum of two (2) teams per age division, from 12-16 years.
Sunshine Carnival is the last state event on the Netball Queensland calendar. The event originally only allowed Associations from outside the Brisbane region to enter, however it is now open to all Associations to participate. The event is held over two days and Associations may enter one (1) team into junior age divisions (13-17 years) and two (2) teams in the Opens division.
Vicki Wilson Cup is a Queensland School Sport owned competition, however Netball Queensland manages the organisation and running of the competition. High Schools across Queensland are able to nominate, and first play against other schools in their school sport region in the Preliminary Rounds. The top 16 schools then fight of for the top placing at the Vicki Wilson Cup Finals Series.
Mission Foods Primary Schools Cup
The Mission Foods Primary Schools Cup is an opportunity for all Primary Schools across Queensland to participate in a large netball Competition. Each school can nominate a maximum of 2 teams, and a $60 nomination fee applies for each team. The Mission Foods Primary Schools Cup is a great opportunity for young girls to make new friends and have fun, as well as teach them the importance of playing sport.
